Migrant entrepreneurs offer untapped potential for the German economy. The importance of students in the context becomes clear when reading through the new start-up strategy of the German government. The strategy lists both the funding of entrepreneurship education for students and the integration of international students into the job market as top priorities.
If you are an international student interested in pursuing entrepreneurship, we at DEGIS have listed three ways you can get help starting your own business below:
1. Get in touch with a “Gründungszentrum” at your University
Many universities in Germany have so-called “Gründungszentren” – or Founding Centers in English. This is a point of information that helps students with answering any questions they may have on the topic of entrepreneurship. Concretely, they offer 1-1 talks with students and help them throughout their entrepreneurship journey from idea to launch. This offer is cost-free.
Make sure that you clarify your visa and working permit situation during that conversation.
If you are not sure how to find them, just ask your International Office or Career Service.
2. Check funding programs of the German Government
The German government is setting a strong focus on entrepreneurship and in line with this stance, offers many funding opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs.
One of the funding programs, EXIST – Existenzgründung aus der Wissenschaft – from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action supports students in their entrepreneurial endeavors through their EXIST-Gründerstipendium, a stipend that supports students and their innovative ideas for a time frame of 12 months.
